Polite behavior includes speaking in a moderate tone, having a friendly demeanor and never engaging in gossip or being openly critical of the church or a church member. General etiquette states that ushers should behave appropriately at all times, even when they are not performing official duties. Women may be asked to wear skirts that extend below the knee and men may be asked to wear slacks, not jeans. Other churches may just request that the ushers dress in a conservative manner. For example, ushers may be asked to dress in black and white. Some churches have a formal dress code so that visitors and new members can instantly recognize the ushers. Although the specifics will vary, there are general rules of etiquette that ushers should follow to show respect to the church and its members. Some of the more common duties of ushers include guiding congregants to their seats, passing collection plates and collecting new member information. Constantly remind them how much you appreciate them and how important their position is to their pastor.Church ushers serve in different ways that vary according to religious tradition and doctrine.Teach them how to deal with disruptive people in the service.When greeting visiting families to the church, if they have a baby, show them where the nursery is at.Train your ushers how to eliminate distractions in the church.Teach your ushers to dress sharp and greet everyone with a smile.We not only budget money for ushers’ jackets we also budget money to dry-clean them three times a year.If possible, purchase matching ushers’ jackets.The head usher should be the one in the back of the auditorium making sure all ushers are in their place and making sure that things flow as smooth as possible.The head usher should be someone who is faithful to all services.It’s good to always post the same ushers in the same section of the church.Always schedule more ushers than you need.I ask all ushers if they will not be able to usher for the service that they are assigned to, they will need to let the head usher know ahead of time.Once every usher has committed to a schedule, I will post the schedule in the ushers’ closet.We have permanent ushers and substitute ushers.
